Wyoming Fly Casters Outing to Muddy Guard #1
On September 30th, the Fly Casters hosted an outing to Muddy Guard Reservoir #1. This particular body of water is between Kaycee and Buffalo, but about 12 people were able to attend the event. The weather was unseasonably warm with only an intermittent wind being detrimental to casting (Okay, the pine trees and shrubs should be included). For those of us who had never been to this lake, it is surprisingly large with much bank fishing access. In fact, one can walk around the entire lake while looking for the perfect spot. Two of our members, Kathy Knapp and Randy Stalker, put in float tubes, and two others threatened to do the same, but never followed through. Suffice it to say that, on this day, the bank fishing was sufficiently good that a flotation device was not necessary. However, the serenity of floating on a lake on a fairly nice day, plus the ability to paddle over to where the rises are happening is a pretty cool deal. Rises occurred very intermittently at first, then picked up as the day went on. The fish caught were large, with almost all being in the 16"-22" range. Most were rainbows but at least one cutthroat was caught. mkeeper, Erik McCormick, was performing this role for the first time, and spent a lot of his time making sure everyone else was having a good time. He had invited K2 meteorologist, Sam Postich, along to film a segment for his Friday morning and noon show. It did air on October 6th, but did not include the footage of him sinking in deep mud, then falling over like a tree during Hurricane Irma. Other than that, Sam proved to be a savvy and enthusiastic fly fisherman and a pleasure to have on the outing. In summary, this was a very enjoyable outing and Erik did a m
asterful job in putting it together. Also, the local BLM office contributed 3 people, including one (orange jacket) who caught her first trout on a fly rod. This will hopefully become a recurring outing for the club.
